What decides the cost to install a split system?
The price is the unit plus the labour and materials to fit it. The unit price moves with capacity, brand, energy efficiency and features such as Wi-Fi control. The installation price moves with the job itself. Two houses on the same street can get very different quotes for the same size unit.
That is why a price you see online rarely matches what you pay. A figure for the unit alone leaves out pipework, wiring, brackets, the drain and the labour to put it all together.
Does the size of the system change the price?
Yes. Split systems are sized by cooling capacity in kilowatts. A bedroom might need a small unit of around 2.5 kW. A main living area often needs 6 to 8 kW or more. Bigger units cost more to buy and can need heavier pipework and a stronger electrical supply.
Bigger is not always better. An oversized unit switches on and off too often and does a poor job of pulling humidity out of the air, which matters on the Sunshine Coast in summer. The right size depends on the room size, ceiling height, windows, afternoon sun and insulation. A good installer will ask about all of these before quoting.
What installation factors can add to the cost?
Distance is the big one. The further the outdoor unit sits from the indoor unit, the more copper pipe, insulation and labour you need. Wall type matters too. Drilling through brick takes longer than going through timber frame and cladding. A second storey wall or a roof position adds access work and time.
Drainage also counts. The indoor unit drains water as it cools. If the drain cannot run downhill to a suitable spot, the job may need a condensate pump.
What else should I check in a split system quote?
Ask exactly what is included. A complete quote should cover the unit, wall bracket, outdoor mounts, pipework up to a stated length, cabling, drain, commissioning and removal of rubbish. Ask what happens if the pipe run turns out longer than allowed, and whether extra metres are charged.
Check the warranty as well. There is the manufacturer warranty on the unit, and there is the installer's warranty on their own work. They are separate things, and you want both.
