Newer homes still get hot. Air conditioning in Peregian Springs has to handle long, humid Sunshine Coast summers in homes that are mostly modern, often two storey, and built with open plan living areas that run straight into the kitchen. This guide covers which system suits, how to plan it around a new or recent build, and what happens on installation day.

What air conditioning suits a Peregian Springs home?

Most Peregian Springs homes suit ducted air conditioning, because they are modern family homes with usable roof space and several bedrooms. Ducted cools every room from hidden ceiling outlets, and zoning lets you cool only the rooms in use. Split systems suit smaller homes, granny flats and anyone who only needs one or two rooms cooled.

A ducted system is designed around the floor plan. The indoor unit sits in the roof space, insulated ductwork runs to a round outlet in each room, and a return air grille draws air back to the unit. A zone controller such as AirTouch 5 splits the house into zones, so the bedrooms can run overnight while the living areas stay off. Our ducted air conditioning page explains how a system is designed and zoned.

Split systems are the better fit where there is no practical roof access, or where only part of the house needs cooling. Each room gets its own wall mounted unit and remote, connected to an outdoor unit outside. Several split systems can also make sense in a home office or a studio above the garage. More detail is on our split system page.

How do you size air conditioning for a two storey home?

A two storey home is sized room by room, not by total floor area. Heat rises, so upstairs bedrooms usually need more capacity than the same rooms downstairs. West facing glass, ceiling height, insulation and open plan spaces all add to the load. A site inspection measures these things so the system copes on the hottest afternoons.

Getting the size right matters in both directions. An undersized system runs flat out and still cannot hold the temperature on a February afternoon. An oversized one cools the room quickly and switches off before it has drawn the moisture out of the air, which leaves the house cool but clammy. On the Sunshine Coast, where humidity is half the problem, a correctly sized system is noticeably more comfortable.

In a two storey home, the zoning plan matters as much as the capacity. Upstairs bedrooms are often their own zone, with the living areas downstairs on another, so you are not paying to cool empty rooms. Outlet positions are planned so that air reaches the far side of each room, rather than blowing straight onto the bed or the couch.

Should I plan air conditioning before I build in Peregian Springs?

Yes. If you are building or extending in Peregian Springs, planning ducted air conditioning before the plasterboard goes up is the simplest and tidiest way to do it. Ductwork, outlets and wiring go in while the frame is open, the return air grille is placed where it suits the layout, and nothing has to be cut in later.

We work from the house plans and design the system around them, then install the ductwork at the frame stage and come back to fit the outlets, controller and outdoor unit once the ceilings are finished. That fits around the builder's program and avoids the compromises of squeezing a system into a finished roof space. If you have bought a recently built home without air conditioning, ducted can still usually be installed, as long as there is enough roof space for the indoor unit and duct runs.

Peregian Springs sits between Coolum Beach and Peregian Beach, a little further from the ocean than the beachfront streets. Outdoor units still need a sensible position with clear airflow around them, and a spot that keeps noise away from bedrooms and the neighbours. Our guide to air conditioning in Coolum Beach covers the beachside side of the area.
