Answers: Servicing and repairs

Can air conditioners develop refrigerant leaks, how do I find one, and how often is a top-up needed?

Yes. An air conditioner's refrigerant circuit is sealed, so it should never need regular top-ups. If your Sunshine Coast system is low on gas, there is a leak somewhere. Signs include weak cooling and ice on the pipes. A licensed technician finds the leak, repairs it, then recharges the system.

Can air conditioners really develop refrigerant leaks?

Yes, they can. Refrigerant is not a fuel. The system does not use it up, and it circulates in a sealed loop of copper pipe, coils and joints. If the level drops, the gas has escaped.

Leaks usually start at the weak points. These include flared pipe joints, brazed joints, service valves and the indoor or outdoor coils. Poor installation, vibration, and pipe rubbing against framing or brackets can all cause them. On the coast, salt air and moisture can slowly corrode copper coils too. Many Sunshine Coast homes sit close to salt air, so it is worth knowing.

How do I know if my air conditioner has a leak?

Start with how the system behaves. Common signs are weak cooling or air that is only mildly cool, a system that runs all day without reaching the set temperature, and ice on the indoor unit or on the outdoor pipes. You might also notice a hissing or bubbling sound, or a higher power bill with no other explanation.

Oily residue on a pipe joint or a coil is another clue. Refrigerant carries a little oil with it, so a leak can leave a greasy patch. A faint chemical smell is possible, but many modern refrigerants have little odour, so do not rely on your nose. None of these signs prove a leak on their own. A dirty filter or blocked coil can cause weak cooling too, so a check is the only way to be sure.

How do I locate the leak?

This is not a DIY job. Finding it properly takes the right tools, and the gas itself must be handled by a licensed person. In Australia, working with refrigerant needs an ARC licence, and it is illegal to let it vent into the air.

A technician usually starts with a visual check for oil stains and damage. Then they use an electronic leak detector, which sniffs for escaping gas around joints and coils. Soapy water on a suspect joint will bubble if it is leaking. For slow or hidden leaks they may pressure test the system with nitrogen, or add a UV dye and look for it with a special light. Some leaks only show up under pressure, which is why a quick look rarely finds them.

How often does an air conditioner need a refrigerant top-up?

In a healthy system, never on a schedule. A sealed system that was installed well should hold its charge for its whole life. A top-up every year or two is not normal servicing. It means gas is escaping.

Topping up without fixing the leak is a short-term patch. The gas will leak out again, you pay again, and the compressor can be damaged while running low. The right order is to find the leak, repair it, test that the system holds pressure, then recharge to the correct amount. If the leak is in a coil that cannot be repaired, replacing that part or the unit may be the sensible option. A technician can tell you which, and what drives the cost, once they have found the fault.
